Method

Every game on the board gets run through two independent projections, SP+ and FPI, and weighted by how competitive the matchup is expected to be. Confidence scores are stated out of 10 straight from that model.

How the board ranked

This week's board leans on games where the projected margin sits well inside the market spread and the game itself still looks playable. Buffalo at FIU and Duke at Illinois are the clearest examples, two projections landing within a field goal of each other while the line asks for a touchdown or more. Middle Tennessee at Marshall gets in on the strength of two bottom-tier defenses keeping the score close even with a talent gap. Rice at Notre Dame is the outlier, a projected 40-plus point loss that still makes the board as the marquee spot, priced down to a 5.0 confidence because the model agrees with the market that this one won't be competitive. Games like Navy-Florida Atlantic and Louisiana-USC had real statistical edges too, but they graded out as blowouts and got passed over for spots where the edge and the competitiveness both show up.

The board

1. Buffalo Bulls +10.5 vs. Florida International Panthers. Sat 09/12, 06:00 PM ET

Best line: +10.5 at LowVig.ag (-116) · Confidence Score: 8.0 / 10

FIU is starting over with coach Willie Simmons, not to be confused with the Willie Simmons who was given life without parole after wrestling a man to the ground to steal $9. Simmons returns just 31.6% of production and hands the offense to JJ Kohl, a 3-star transfer from App State who achieved 1 passing TD on 50 attempts last week against South Florida. Sounds like me at the bars in my early twenties. The Panthers rank 116th in SP+ and 115th on defense.

Buffalo isn't much better on paper (109th in SP+, 125th on offense) under Pete Lembo, with almost the entire roster turned over and a new starter in Elijah Holmes aka the_dot_thrower, who transferred from the prestigous Wingate University. But Buffalo's defense checks in 80th, well ahead of FIU's overall standing.

Thesis. Two rebuilding programs, but the market is treating this like a two-score mismatch when both projections see it inside a field goal. Not to mention, Buffalo is notorious for playing every game close, no matter the opponent. Whether facing off against a real FBS school or against the New England Brothahood, that game has a high probability of staying within 10 points.

The numbers. SP+ has FIU favored by just 0.5, FPI by 2.9. The market sits at 10.5. That's a 7.6-point dual edge, and the resulting alpha ratio of 2.53 is the highest on the board this week.

What breaks this.

FIU gets a full home crowd of 15k people for a season opener and Buffalo's roster overhaul is close to total. If Buffalo's new offense is as disjointed early as the churn suggests, this could turn into the blowout the market expects. It doesn't help that Buffalo gave away 110+ yards on 10 penalties against... Albany.

2. Duke Blue Devils +6 vs. Illinois Fighting Illini. Sat 09/12, 03:30 PM ET

Best line: +6 at DraftKings (-110) · Confidence Score: 7.0 / 10

Illinois enters under Bret Bielema, once the widest coach in the SEC, with a top-40 SP+ ranking and a 34th-ranked offense, now running through transfer QB Katin Houser (3-star, East Carolina), who looks like he would sell you counterfeit tickets to see Morgan Wallen at Soldier Field.

Duke, under Manny Diaz, sits just four spots behind Illinois in SP+ (45th) and matches them at 34th in offense, but the Blue Devils lost starting QB Darian Mensah to the portal and are turning to human chipmunk Walker Eget (3-star, San José State) to replace him.

Thesis. These are two programs the models see as close to equals, and the market number doesn't reflect that. Nate Sheppard ran a 5K on the field against Tulane. Meanwhile, Illinois gave up 413 yards to UAB last weekend while struggling to get their defense off the field - just look at the time of possesion.

The numbers. SP+ has Illinois favored by 3.3, FPI by 3.4. The market is at 6.0, a 2.6-point dual edge with an alpha ratio of 0.78.

What breaks this.

Duke's QB change is the bigger variable here - he only looked okay against Tulane. If Illinois' offense gets going like it did against UAB, this could turn into a 7-10 point difference.

3. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders +13.5 vs. Marshall Thundering Herd. Sat 09/12, 07:00 PM ET

Best line: +13.5 at DraftKings (-112) · Confidence Score: 7.0 / 10

Marshall returns nearly its entire roster (98.8%) under the underwhelming Tony Gibson, with returning starter Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (2,043 yards, 17 TD, 5 INT) still running the offense. Some are calling CDRW the most slept on QB in the league, and you would be right to criticize them. The defense ranks 133rd nationally.

Middle Tennessee, under Derek Mason, is the weaker overall team by both models (127th in SP+ compared to Marshall's 117th) and returns only 32.5% of production, with Roman Gagliano (1,011 yards, 7 TD, 0 INT), who looks like he delivers pizzas in the offseason, at QB. MTSU's defense ranks 131st, nearly as poor as Marshall's.

Thesis. With both defenses ranked in the bottom ten nationally, this has the shape of a track meet that stays within range of the market number's floor rather than the blowout the spread implies. Marshall put up a goose egg against Penn State last weekend, losing 45-0, and CDRW is the QB and RB simulataneously. This does not scream high powered offense.

The numbers. SP+ projects Marshall by 8.8, FPI by just 4.3. The market is at 13.5, a 4.7-point dual edge and an alpha ratio of 0.72.

What breaks this.

Marshall's continuity is real. A team returning nearly its whole roster with a proven starting QB could pull away early against a Middle Tennessee squad that turned over two-thirds of its production, validating the number priced in the spread. CDRW could also go god mode...

4. Rice Owls +44.5 vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Sat 09/12, 03:30 PM ET

Best line: +44.5 at DraftKings (-108) · Confidence Score: 5.0 / 10

Notre Dame is the best team on the board by a wide margin, third in SP+ with the No. 1 offense and 7th-ranked defense under Marcus Freeman, running through QB C.J. Carr (2,741 yards, 24 TD, 6 INT).

Rice, under Scott Abell, ranks 105th in SP+ with a 96th-ranked defense and a shaky QB situation. Abell implements a spread option attack known as the "Rice Gun Choice," which means that Jacurri Brown never passes the ball.

Thesis. This is the marquee number of the week, and it's the one spot where both models agree with the market that a blowout is coming, the only question is by how much. Notre Dame has no reason to keep frying Rice in the second half of this game, and Abell is trying to turn their program around. It's also hard to truly blow out a team that runs the ball religiously, as proven by the military schools.

The numbers. SP+ projects Notre Dame by 39.6, FPI by 41.5. The market sits at 44.5, a 3.0-point dual edge and a projected margin of 40.5. That's the lowest alpha ratio on the board (0.07), reflected in the lower confidence score.

What breaks this.

Notre Dame's No. 1 offense against a Rice defense that ranks 96th and a limited starting QB is exactly the matchup that could push this past the market's number, especially if Freeman keeps starters in the game. Notre Dame will be scoring at will - the question is when in the game they step off the gas.

Bonus. Moneyline upset of the week

Arizona Wildcats ML +260 vs. BYU Cougars. Sat 09/12, 03:30 PM ET. Best line: +260 (best of book).

BYU is the higher-rated side, 18th in SP+ with a top-20 unit on both sides (18th offense, 19th defense) under longtime coach Kalani Sitake. The Cougars bring back 78.5% of their production and a proven starter in QB Bear Bachmeier (3,033 yards, 15 TD, 7 INT), and they get this one at home. BYU also went crazy on Utah Tech last weekend, which is the equivalent to Enes Kanter dropping 50 points in his WNBA debut.

Arizona is not far behind, and that's the bet. The Wildcats rank 24th in SP+ with the 24th offense and 25th defense under Brent Brennan, return 64.9% of their production, and run the offense through short king Noah Fifita (3,228 yards, 29 TD, 6 INT), one of the more efficient quarterbacks on the board. This is two ranked Big 12 teams playing each other.

Thesis. The model gives Arizona a 30.6% win probability while the market's implied probability at +260 is about 27.8%. The projected margin is 8.1 points, so BYU is the deserved favorite, but Arizona is a balanced top-25 team with a 29-touchdown quarterback getting a plus-money price in a conference road game. The edge is modest, and the appeal is the quality of the underdog rather than a market mispricing.

What breaks this.

BYU is simply the better team by the numbers (16.8 SP+ rating to Arizona's 12.6), returns nearly 80% of its roster, and has home field. If the Cougars control the line of scrimmage the way their top-20 rankings suggest, this projects as a clear 1-2 score for BYU.
