Method

Every game on the board gets run through two independent projections, SP+ and FPI, and the resulting gap between those models and the market line is weighted by how competitive the game actually projects to be. A tight projected margin with a real gap to the market carries more weight than a lopsided one, even if the raw point discrepancy looks bigger in the blowout. Confidence scores are stated out of 10 as given, not recalculated here, and none of this is a guarantee, it is a probability lean based on the numbers in front of us.

How the board ranked

The four core picks this week all cluster around single digit spreads in games that project as genuinely close, which is exactly the profile the method rewards. The blowouts got scanned too. Buffalo at Penn State, New Mexico at Oklahoma, Northern Illinois at Arizona, North Dakota State at Sacramento State, and UAB at Louisiana all showed a real gap between model and market, but the alpha weighting knocks those down the board because a projected 30 or 40 point margin leaves little room for the edge to actually surface in backable form. Michigan State at Notre Dame made the cut anyway as the one marquee blowout with a confidence score to match its lower alpha ratio.

The board

1. Ohio Bobcats +7.5 vs. South Alabama Jaguars. Sat 09/19, 07:00 PM ET

Best line: +7.5 at BetRivers (-134) · Confidence Score: 6.7 / 10

South Alabama returns 78.6 percent of production under Texas QB legend, Major Applewhite. Bishop Davenport, who entered the transfer portal after completing half of his passes at Utah State, threw for 2,072 yards with 12 touchdowns and 6 interceptions last year. This team played exceptionally well against Tulane last week despite losing by 4 - they covered the 9.5 point spread and went 10/16 on third down conversions with zero turnovers.

Ohio is in transition under new coach John Hauser, who is often confused with the team's IT support lead. He replaced Brian Smith, who was fired for allegedly having alcohol in his office and an alleged affair with an undergraduate student. But what do multiple sources know? Ohio returns only 62.5 percent of production. After getting pummeled by Nebraska, Ohio did the ole QB switcharoo and moved New Hampshire transfer Matt Vezza in for Nick Poulos, leading to an OT victory against Jax State last weekend. Duncan Brune and Dom Dorwart lead the skill spots, and the Bobcats brought in receiver Preston Bowman from Kentucky and edge Tyler Gillison from Michigan State.

Thesis. The market has South Alabama favored by a full touchdown, but both independent models see this as a much tighter game, and Ohio's defense (77th nationally) is stronger than its offensive question marks suggest. Matt Vezza runs the ball on 50% of his possessions, and South Alabama let Tulane's RB average 19 yards per carry. My man was running a 40 yard dash every other play.

The numbers. The market lists South Alabama at -7.0. SP+ has the Jaguars favored by just 4.4, FPI by 4.0. That is a 2.6 point dual edge, with a blended projected margin of 4.2 in South Alabama's favor. The alpha ratio of 0.62 signals a competitive game, which is why it ranks near the top of the board.

What breaks this.

Ohio's quarterback situation is unsettled with Poulos producing almost nothing through the air and a grad transfer still working into the lineup. If the offense stalls completely, South Alabama's defense and home crowd could turn this into the kind of game where the extra 3.5 points on the market number actually matter.

2. Missouri State Bears +5.5 vs. Marshall Thundering Herd. Sat 09/19, 06:30 PM ET

Best line: +5.5 at BetRivers (-129) · Confidence Score: 6.3 / 10

Missouri State is a rebuild under new coach Casey Woods (former SMU OC), replacing Ryan Beard, and returns only 31.3 percent of production, the lowest number on this week's board. 3-star transfer Skyler Locklear in from UTEP is behind center. Ramone Green Jr. leads the run game and Jared Lloyd anchors the defense, with edge Dylan Brooks (Kansas) and tight end Witt Edwards (Vanderbilt) added via the portal. This team got absolutely lambasted against Texas A&M in the season opener, only to then give it to Lindenwood 48-14.

Marshall returns nearly its entire roster (98.8%) under the underwhelming Tony Gibson, with returning starter Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (2,043 yards, 17 TD, 5 INT) still running the offense. As we've mentioned before, some are calling CDRW the most slept on QB in the league. He heard the chatter last week and went absolutely off against Middle Tennessee, throwing for 92 yards. We have heard from several undisclosed sources that he is aiming for 100 yards in this game.

Thesis. The models disagree sharply on this one, with SP+ seeing a near pick'em and FPI actually favoring Missouri State, which points to more uncertainty than the market's number reflects. This is the uncertainty of a lopsided schedule working into the numbers, and we are taking advantage. We faded Marshall last week, and we will do it again. We are also taking the under on CDRW's total yardage.

The numbers. The market has Missouri State at +4.0. SP+ projects the Bears at +2.3, while FPI actually has them favored by 4.4. That split produces a 1.7 point dual edge and a blended projected margin of 3.3, with an alpha ratio of 0.51 marking this as a coin flip type of game.

What breaks this.

Missouri State's 31.3 percent returning production is the lowest of any team on the board this week, and if the new-look roster under Woods has not gelled yet, Marshall's veteran continuity (98.8 percent returning) and CDRW's unprecendented field presence could turn this into a comfortable Herd win.

3. Nevada Wolf Pack -3.5 vs. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. Sat 09/19, 07:00 PM ET

Best line: -3.5 at DraftKings (-112) · Confidence Score: 6.2 / 10

Middle Tennessee returns just 32.5 percent of production under Derek Mason, who stays on after last season. Pizza delivery driver Roman Gagliano threw the ball to everyone on the field, including the fans and players on the sideline, in their narrow loss against Marshall last week. When the throws stayed inbounds, Cam'Ron Lacy was pulling them down.

Nevada is under Jeff Choate, who looks like a lawyer representing himself in court for a DWI charge, and returns 35.5 percent of production. QB Carter Jones looked decent against Western Kentucky in Week 1, although they ran the ball most of the game. In Week 2 against supposed powerhouse Montana State, Choate benched Jones for no apparent reason, slotting in A.J. Bianco and UCLA transfer Luke Duncan, who collectively threw 3 interceptions and lost the game 20-7 despite outperforming on most offensive team stats. Apparently Jones had a "shoulder bruise" which is totally believable... makes even more sense that Nevada tweeted "Locked in. Ready to go. Carter Jones leads the Wolf Pack into tonight's matchup with Montana State" before the game.

Thesis. Both independent models see this as a significant Nevada win, well beyond what the market spread suggests, largely on the strength of Middle Tennessee's bottom-tier defense. It doesn't even matter who is playing quarterback in this game. As long as CDRW doesn't transfer before the game and suit up for Nevada, this should be a steamrolling.

The numbers. The market lists Middle Tennessee at +3.5. SP+ has the Blue Raiders as much bigger underdogs at +11.3, and FPI has them at +7.9. That is a 4.4 point dual edge, the largest gap on the board among the core picks, with a blended projected margin of 9.6 in Nevada's favor. The alpha ratio of 0.46 keeps this competitive enough to rank.

What breaks this.

Carter Jones might show up with a "sore neck" because he "slept wrong." That is enough to make this pick not work, but it also requires Roman Gagliano to deliver more than pizzas this game.

Bonus. Moneyline upset of the week

Purdue Boilermakers ML +500 vs. UCLA Bruins, Sat 09/19, 11:00 PM ET

Best line: +500 (best of book)

UCLA is under new coach Bob Chesney, CEO of hair gel, and is on a tear so far. After demolishing the spread against Cal, they easily beat San Diego State, almost exclusively on the ground.

Purdue is in year two under Barry Odom, who looks like a villain with a secret lair in a bowling alley. returns 47.5 percent of production. After cooking Indiana State, QB Ryan Browne threw for 329 yards against Wake Forest. The Boilermakers also added edge Elo Modozie from Georgia and running back Jerrick Gibson from Texas.

Thesis. The model gives Purdue a real chance to win outright, well above what the market's implied probability suggests, even in a game UCLA is favored to win comfortably on the spread. UCLA is also a program that drops games they should win. It is in the California DNA.

The numbers. UCLA is favored by 14 on the market spread, with SP+ at -12.7 and FPI at -9.8, a 1.3 point dual edge and a blended projected margin of 11.2 in UCLA's favor. The model's win probability for Purdue sits at 24.1 percent, compared to the market's implied probability of just 16.7 percent off the +500 price. That gap is the entire case for the play.

What breaks this.

UCLA's roster overhaul under Chesney has produced a top-40 SP+ team that has looked great so far. If Purdue's offense turns the ball over on the road the way it did a year ago, this stays a comfortable UCLA win and the number never gets tested.
